Expert Advice: Eye-clean Diamonds
Eye clean diamonds basically refer to diamonds that do not have any inclusions that are visible to the naked eye. This is an unofficial term, and when it is used it is generally assumed that it is under conditions of 20/20 human vision and a distance of six to 12 inches.
This is what most people look for when they are buying a diamond. They don’t want to buy a diamond that has evident blemishes. However, they also don’t want to be forced into spending higher sums of money when the inclusions can only be seen under magnification. Most of the time, those graded VSI or higher do not feature any inclusions that are visible to the naked eye.
A grading report alone cannot tell you whether a diamond will be eye clean, for example, VS2 is a grade higher than SI1, but there is a chance that the higher-grade diamond could have visible inclusions. If you buy a diamond that is ranked VS1 or above, this is something you generally won’t have to worry about.
