Do lab grown diamonds change color over time?
No. A quality lab-grown diamond does not change color over time. Why lab-grown diamonds stay stable
Lab-grown diamonds are created through High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) processes that reproduce the conditions under which natural diamonds form. The result is real diamond: the same carbon crystal structure, the same 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, and the same resistance to heat, light and everyday chemicals. So why might a diamond look different later?
When a ring seems to have changed color, the diamond itself is rarely the cause. The usual culprits are:
- Everyday buildup — lotion, soap and skin oils form a film that dulls sparkle and can add a grayish or yellowish cast until the stone is cleaned.
- Setting wear — white gold is plated with rhodium, which gradually wears and lets the warmer metal beneath show through, making the diamond look less white by contrast.
- Simulants, not diamonds — materials such as cubic zirconia or moissanite are not diamond and can cloud or discolor; this is why buying a certified stone matters.
- Damaged treatments — a small number of stones receive post-growth treatments; a reputable, certified diamond will disclose any treatment up front.

- Avoid harsh chemicals, chlorine and abrasive cleaners that can attack the metal setting.
- Have the setting checked and, if needed, re-rhodium plated every year or two.
- Store pieces separately so stones do not scratch softer metals.
