It Starts With a Diamond Seed

Method One: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT)

The seed is placed with a source of carbon and exposed to temperatures above 1,400°C and pressures of many gigapascals. Under those conditions the carbon dissolves and crystallizes onto the seed, growing a rough diamond that is then cut and polished. It is the older of the two techniques and produces exceptionally high-quality stones.

Method Two: Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)

CVD takes a different route. The seed is placed in a sealed chamber filled with a carbon-rich gas such as methane. The gas is heated until it breaks down, and carbon atoms rain down onto the seed, building the diamond layer by layer. CVD offers precise control over the growing conditions and has become the method of choice for many high-clarity stones.
