Gemstones from Tanzania

Tanzania is extraordinary among gemstone-producing nations in the sheer variety and quality of material it produces. Most famously, it is the sole source in the world of tanzanite — the remarkable blue-violet zoisite discovered near Mount Kilimanjaro in 1967. Tanzania also produces tsavorite garnet, rhodolite garnet, chrome tourmaline, alexandrite, and ruby from the Winza and Mahenge deposits.

Tanzanian Gem Highlights

  • Tanzanite: found only in a tiny area near Arusha; strongly trichroic blue-violet.
  • Tsavorite Garnet: vivid pure green; found in the Tsavo region bordering Kenya.
  • Mahenge Spinel: exceptional vivid pinks and reds from the Mahenge plateau.
  • Chrome Tourmaline: intense chromium-green; found in the Umba Valley.
