The Ultimate Guide to Diamond Engagement Rings

A diamond engagement ring is one of the most meaningful purchases you will ever make – and, for many people, the least familiar. Knowing how diamonds are graded, which settings suit different lifestyles and how to get the most from your budget takes the pressure out of the decision. This guide brings it all together.

In short

Focus on the 4Cs – cut, colour, clarity and carat – with cut as the top priority for sparkle. Always buy a GIA- or IGI-certified stone, choose a setting and metal to match daily wear, and consider a lab-grown diamond to get a larger or higher-quality stone for the same money. Begin with our engagement rings collection.

Understanding the 4Cs

The 4Cs are the universal language of diamond quality. Cut determines how brilliantly a diamond reflects light and has the biggest impact on sparkle – never compromise here. Colour is graded D (colourless) to Z; near-colourless grades of G–H offer excellent value. Clarity describes internal inclusions; an eye-clean VS stone looks flawless without the flawless price. Carat is weight, not size. Our diamond education section explains how to balance them.

Choosing a diamond shape

Round brilliant is the most popular and most sparkling shape. Ovals and elongated cuts look larger for their weight and flatter the finger; princess and emerald cuts offer a distinctive, modern character; and pear or marquise shapes make a striking, individual choice. Pick the shape that reflects the wearer's personality first.

Settings and metals

The setting shapes the ring's whole personality: a solitaire is timeless, a halo adds sparkle and size, three-stone designs carry symbolic meaning, and pavé bands add extra shimmer. For metal, platinum is durable, naturally white and hypoallergenic; 18ct white gold gives a similar look for less; and yellow or rose gold add warmth. Think ahead to a matching wedding band so the two sit well together.

Natural or lab-grown?

Both are real, certified diamonds. Lab-grown stones cost significantly less for the same size and quality, while natural diamonds tend to hold more resale value. If maximising the stone on your budget matters most, lab-grown is compelling – see our price comparison and browse our lab-grown diamonds.

Setting a budget

Forget the outdated 'three months' salary' rule – spend what is comfortable for you. Decide on a total figure, then adjust stone size and quality to fit. Choosing lab-grown or a slightly lower colour and clarity grade that still looks beautiful are the easiest ways to stay on budget without sacrificing sparkle. Still unsure on size? Read our guide on how many carats an engagement ring should be.

Certification and ring size

Only buy a diamond that comes with an independent certificate from a respected laboratory such as GIA or IGI – it documents exactly what you are paying for. For ring size, discreetly measure an existing ring the wearer uses, and remember most rings can be resized after the proposal.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most important of the 4Cs? Cut. A superbly cut diamond sparkles brilliantly even at a modest colour and clarity grade.

How much should I spend on an engagement ring? Whatever is comfortable for you. Set a budget and choose a stone – natural or lab-grown – that maximises beauty within it.

Are lab-grown diamonds a good choice for engagement rings? Yes. They are genuine, certified diamonds that cost less, so you can buy larger or better quality for the same budget.
