Coloured diamonds – also referred to as “fancy diamonds” – are a rare and mesmerising type of natural diamond found in a spectrum of remarkable shades. In the world of diamonds, rarity often determines value, and fancy coloured diamonds are far less common than traditional white diamonds.

Only around one in every 10,000 diamonds naturally develops with a fancy colour, making them some of the most prized and sought-after gemstones available. These diamonds occur in a wide variety of colours – from popular pinks and yellows to the exceptionally rare blues, greens, oranges, and purples.

Unlike colourless diamonds, which are valued for their lack of colour (graded on the GIA’s D-to-Z scale), fancy coloured diamonds become more valuable as the depth and vibrancy of their hue increases. These diamonds sit beyond the Z scale, with the most vivid examples being especially rare and valuable.

There are 12 primary colour categories, over 90 secondary hues, nine intensity levels, and more than 230 potential colour combinations. Many fancy coloured diamonds have blended tones due to secondary hues such as Gray, brown, or orange. The most desirable diamonds are those with rich, vivid colouring, strong saturation, and minimal dilution.

Among these, natural fancy Gray diamonds stand out for their soft, smoky appearance and sophisticated neutrality. Though often more understated than vivid coloured diamonds, high-quality Gray diamonds are deeply elegant and offer a refined alternative to traditional white stones.

One of the most well-known examples is the “Sloan Gray Diamond” – a 12.38-carat fancy Gray oval-cut gem renowned for its silvery brilliance and subtle allure.
