What You Need to Know About Lab-Grown Diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds are also known as lab-created, engineered, man-made or synthetic diamonds. These sparkling gemstones are created in a laboratory using either a high-pressure high temperature (HPHT) or chemical vapour deposition (CVD) process.

Lab-grown diamonds have the same chemical, physical and optical properties as natural mined diamonds — they are exactly the same and it’s impossible for the average person to distinguish between the two. A jeweller wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between a lab-grown and natural diamond without a lens, which reveals a minute laser engraving identifying a diamond as lab-made.

Lab-grown diamonds last forever, just as mined diamonds do. Formed from pure carbon, they are tough, durable and scratch-resistant, making them a beautiful gemstone to treasure for life.

Many of our clients love lab-grown diamonds because they are made ethically and through processes more sustainable than diamond mining. They’re also popular because they offer excellent value for money, allowing you to purchase a large diamond ring with a smaller budget.

Lab-made diamonds are graded and certified by both the International Gemological Institute (IGI) and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) — the same internationally recognised governing bodies that certify natural diamonds. Therefore, when you buy a lab-grown diamond engagement ring from Rêve Diamonds, you can do so with complete confidence, as it will always be accompanied by an official grading report.

You may have heard that lab-created diamonds lose their value in time. Although it’s true that the resale value of a lab-grown diamond ring will generally be around 30-40% less than you paid for it, the same can be said of natural diamond rings. When shopping for any kind of diamond, you should view the gemstone as a symbol of love and a thing of beauty rather than an economic investment.
