Gemstones from Mozambique

Mozambique has risen rapidly to become one of the world's most significant coloured gemstone producers. The country is now the world's largest producer of gem rubies by volume, with the Montepuez deposit discovered in 2009 transforming the global ruby market. Mozambique also produces copper-bearing Paraíba-type tourmalines comparable to the finest Brazilian material, making it one of only three countries producing this extremely rare gem.

Mozambican Gem Highlights

  • Ruby: the Montepuez deposit is the world's largest known ruby deposit; stones range from fine "pigeon blood" quality to commercial grades.
  • Paraíba Tourmaline: copper-bearing stones from Mozambique and Nigeria are certified by major labs alongside Brazilian material.
  • Spinel: exceptional red, pink, and orange spinels from alluvial deposits.
