Coloured diamonds – also referred to as “fancy diamonds” – are an exceptionally rare and captivating category of natural diamonds, found in a spectrum of extraordinary shades. In the world of fine diamonds, rarity is a key factor in determining value – and fancy coloured diamonds are significantly less common than traditional white diamonds.
Only around one in every 10,000 diamonds naturally develops with a fancy colour, making them some of the most sought-after and prized gemstones available. These coloured diamonds occur in a range of hues – from popular pinks and yellows to the exceptionally rare blues, greens, oranges, and reds.
Unlike colourless diamonds, which are valued for their absence of colour (graded on the GIA’s D-to-Z scale), fancy coloured diamonds grow in value with greater colour intensity. These diamonds sit beyond the Z scale, with the richest and most vivid hues commanding the highest prices.
There are 12 primary colour classifications, more than 90 secondary hues, nine levels of intensity, and over 230 recognised colour combinations. Many fancy coloured diamonds exhibit blended tones due to the presence of secondary colours like grey, brown, or yellow. The most desirable stones are those with vibrant saturation and minimal dilution.
Among these, natural fancy green diamonds are especially fascinating due to their rare formation and distinctive, natural colour. Genuine green diamonds with pure and even colour are among the most elusive in the world, making them truly unique in high jewellery.
One renowned example is the “Dresden Green” – a 41-carat, pear-shaped natural green diamond known for its rich hue and historical significance, now housed in the Dresden Castle in Germany.
Fancy green diamonds are unlike any other coloured diamond. Their unique green hue is typically caused by natural radiation interacting with the diamond over thousands or even millions of years, often near uranium deposits. This interaction alters the diamond's atomic structure and creates the soft green colour seen on the surface.
The green tone can vary from pale mint to deep forest green and may include overtones of grey, blue, or yellow. Because natural radiation generally affects only the outer layers of the diamond, achieving even colour throughout the stone is exceptionally rare.
Green diamonds offer a subtle brilliance and an organic, fresh aesthetic that stands out from both colourless and more vivid fancy diamonds. They’re favoured for their natural charm, rarity, and soothing tone, making them ideal for collectors and modern fine jewellery designs.
Grading fancy coloured diamonds requires specialised expertise due to the wide range of hues, tones, and saturations. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is the world’s leading authority in diamond grading and uses both master stones and colour references to assess each diamond’s quality.
Unlike white diamonds, which are evaluated based on clarity, cut, and lack of colour, fancy coloured diamonds are graded for hue, tone, and saturation. For green diamonds, additional scrutiny is applied to determine whether the colour is natural or artificially enhanced, as green is one of the most commonly treated colours in the diamond world.
At Rêve Diamonds, all of our fancy green diamonds are 100% natural and untreated. Each stone is GIA- or IGI-certified to confirm the authenticity of its colour and origin, ensuring you receive a genuine and traceable green diamond.

A fancy green diamond is a natural diamond that exhibits a green body colour, usually caused by exposure to natural radiation over thousands of years. This colour often appears on or near the surface and may be combined with secondary hues.
Yes, green diamonds do occur naturally, though some on the market have been treated to enhance their colour. At Rêve Diamonds, we offer only untreated, GIA-certified natural green diamonds with verified colour origin.
Unlike other fancy coloured diamonds that derive colour from trace elements like nitrogen (yellow) or boron (blue), green diamonds get their colour from natural radiation. Their tone is often subtle, and pure green stones with even distribution are extremely rare.
Yes. Naturally coloured green diamonds are among the most valuable fancy diamonds, especially those with even colour and strong saturation. Their rarity and natural formation process make them highly desirable.
Absolutely. Green diamonds offer a unique, earthy beauty and are an elegant choice for engagement rings. They pair beautifully with white or rose gold and are often enhanced with colourless or champagne diamond accents.
A GIA or IGI certificate will confirm the origin of the diamond’s colour. Treated green diamonds are common, so it’s essential to purchase certified stones to ensure authenticity and natural origin.
Yes. Natural green diamonds are considered strong investment pieces due to their extreme rarity, especially in vivid and untreated forms. Their increasing popularity adds to their long-term appeal and value.
Green diamonds are as durable as any other diamond, but due to their value and rarity, we recommend gentle cleaning with warm water and soap. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and have your settings professionally checked yearly.
