Does GIA Certify Lab-Grown Diamonds?

Yes. The Gemological Institute of America has graded laboratory-grown diamonds since 2007, and every report is clearly stamped "Laboratory-Grown" so there is never any ambiguity about a stone's origin. Since 2021, GIA has also offered a streamlined Lab-Grown Diamond Report alongside its full Diamond Grading Report, both using the same Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat scale applied to natural diamonds.

GIA does not apply different quality standards to lab-grown stones — a G colour is a G colour, whichever way the diamond was formed. What GIA is known for is consistency: its graders are widely considered the most conservative in the industry, meaning a GIA grade is rarely, if ever, generous. That reputation is exactly why we stock GIA-certified lab-grown diamonds and let you filter for them directly using the Report selector above.

IGI vs GIA for Lab-Grown Diamonds: Which Is Better?

IGI currently certifies the largest share of lab-grown diamonds worldwide, and its reports are excellent, detailed and internationally recognised. GIA, however, is the laboratory jewellers and insurers most often defer to when a grade needs to be beyond dispute — its grading tends to run a shade more conservatively than IGI's on the same physical stone, so a diamond graded VS1 by IGI might come back VS2 under GIA's stricter eye.

Neither laboratory is "better" in absolute terms, but the right choice depends on your priority. Choose GIA if you want the strongest resale confidence, the most conservative grading for insurance purposes, or you're buying a larger, investment-grade stone where documentation matters most. Choose IGI if you're prioritising the widest selection or marginally better perceived value at the same stated grade. For most of our GIA-certified customers, the deciding factor is simple: peace of mind that the grade on the report is exactly what they'll see under the loupe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a GIA-certified lab-grown diamond a real diamond?

Yes. It has the same chemical composition, physical hardness and optical brilliance as a mined diamond. The only distinction GIA notes on the report is that it was grown in a laboratory rather than formed underground.

Does a GIA certificate cost more than an IGI certificate?

GIA-certified lab-grown diamonds typically carry a small premium over IGI-certified equivalents of the same grade, reflecting GIA's grading rigour and lower lab-grown volumes — though both remain 50–70% less than a comparable mined diamond.

How do I see only GIA-certified diamonds in this search?

The Report filter above is already set to GIA, so every result shown is GIA-certified. You can change or clear this filter at any time to include IGI-certified stones as well.

Will a GIA report be accepted by insurers and valuers in the UK?

Yes. GIA reports are widely recognised by UK insurers and independent valuers, making them a strong choice if you plan to insure or later have your diamond professionally appraised.
