De Beers is perhaps most generally famous for its marketing campaign which began in the 1930s and had a major impact on diamond engagement rings. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, the price of diamonds collapsed and engagement rings were falling out of fashion. In 1947 the famous slogan ‘A Diamond Is Forever’ was conceived by Ayer a copywriter for De Beers and this slogan has since become world famous, and is still used by the company today. A Diamond Is Forever’ was used to spearhead of the De Beers advertising campaign to persuade consumers that an engagement ring is indispensable, and that a diamond is the only acceptable stone for an engagement ring as it forever promises endless romance and companionship. This clever marketing campaign by De Beers was undoubtedly responsible for the resurgence of diamonds as the number one gemstone used in engagement and wedding rings.
Perhaps the most famous De Beers diamond is the Millennium Star weighing a staggering 203.04 carats (40.608 g). The Millennium Star is the world's second largest known top-colour (grade D, i.e. colourless), internally and externally flawless, pear-shaped diamond. This stunning diamond was discovered in Zaire in 1990 in alluvial deposits; uncut, it was 777 carats (155.4 g). It was purchased by De Beers in the early to mid-nineties and took over three years for workers of the Steinmetz Diamond Group to produce the classic pear form and the actual cutting was done using lasers.
The Millennium Star was first displayed in October 1999 as the centrepiece of the De Beers Millennium diamond collection which also includes eleven blue diamonds’ totalling 118 carats (23.6 g) and The Heart of Eternity. They were displayed at London’s Millennium Dome over 2000.
